She Did What She Could

Darrell Adcock, Director of Worship

Today I came across an account in the Bible about worship that has always piqued my curiosity. I was reminded of it from the Fellowship Journal reading in Mark 14.

Jesus was dining at the home of Simon the Leper when a woman comes, breaks open an alabaster jar filled with very expensive perfume, and pours it over Jesus’ head. Scripture tells us it cost her a year’s wage. Some rebuked her for “wasting” what could have served the poor.

Jesus’ response?  “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.  The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Perhaps your reaction is like mine… What is the most worship has “cost me” Am I holding anything back? Or how many times have I questioned the motives and worship of others, missing what God was really doing in that moment? How often has my focus in Jesus’ presence been what I get out of it rather than what I came to give to Him?
May we enter into worship today with a “sacrifice of praise”; a gift to offer Him. May our response in worship impact our world where the gospel is preached. I pray Jesus could say of us, they did what they could!

See you on the Sabbath!
